Tyler Maguire and winning connections – in the Alexandra Park winner’s enclosure.

Waiuku junior driver Kyle Marshall made his family proud at northern harness racing headquarters (Alexandra Park) in Auckland tonight (Friday June 2). The 18-year-old notched up his fifth career win behind 4-year-old mare, Tyler Maguire in the Mid Winter Christmas Pace for 1-2 winners.

All of Marshall’s family have a piece of Tyler Maguire. There’s Mum – Sandra and her partner; Dad – ‘Cricket’ and his partner; and Kyle’s grandfather – Gary Davis.

“It was a great feeling to win behind her especially in front of the family. It was quite special. The mare is giving us all a lot fun,” said Marshall, who also has a share in the daughter of Elsu.
Marshall belied his years with a very mature and patient drive behind the third favourite ($5.90 & $1.80).

Starting from two on the second row they ended up three and then four-deep before the Franklin teenager hooked Tyler Maguire off the markers at the 600 metres.

They came three wide with cover and at the finish line got up by half a head over Bettabe Fast (Tony Herlihy, MNZM). Outsider Maheer Magic and Todd Macfarlane were a head back in third.

Winner’s time for the 2200m mobile: 2:46.9.

Mile rate: 2:02.2.

Last 800m: 61. Last 400m: 29.8.

It was the Michelle Walllis trained mare’s third win in 25 starts – and second at Alexandra Park.

“We leased her off Les White, who trained her. I drove her once at the workouts and she felt good. Dad also liked the horse and it all went from there,” Marshall said.

He wasn’t sure if he won tonight.

“I knew it was close. It’s really hard to tell. To be honest I thought Tony (Herlihy) might have just hung on,” he said.

It was inevitable that Marshall would enter the harness racing ranks.

Born in Hamilton, Marshall left Cambridge High School when he was 16. His father David (Cricket) is a trainer and has won six races since 2007-2008.

“I’ve been around horses most of my life. I love them. I did Kidz Kartz before I left school. Dad has been an inspiration to me. I’m so enjoying what I do now. It’s sometimes hard to believe I’m actually doing this for a living,” Marshall said.

Marshall was employed by Cambridge conditioner Mike Berger when he left school. He worked for him for just over a year before joining forces with Wallis and Hackett in March last year.
